Course Purpose Statement
Advanced Program English 1 focuses on developing the fundamentals of critical reading, on developing the fundamentals of academic and creative composition, and on developing students’ ability to communicate in a wide variety of ways for a wide variety of audiences and purposes in preparation for International Baccalaureate (IB) Language Arts study at Atherton High School during the 11th and 12th grade years, either in the college-level Higher Level (HL) IB Literature study program or in the college-preparatory Standard Level (SL) IB Language & Literature program. This course places an emphasis on preparing students for the standards of college & career readiness - as defined by the Kentucky Common Core Reading, Writing, and Communication standards - over the next four years, which are measured by the English assessments that all students take at the end of 10th and 11th grade years and by the ACT test that all students take in the 11th grade year. Additionally, many Advanced Program English I students will prepare starting this year to earn college credit with the Advanced Placement English Language & Composition exam that they will take in their 10th grade year and with the completion of HL IB English Literature examinations during the 11th and 12th grade years. As such, students will practice the principles outlined by the IB Learner Profile in order to continue developing as principled, open-minded, caring, and knowledgeable inquirers who are life-long thinkers, and apt communicators. |

Materials Needed for the Course
- TWO (2) Composition notebooks for reading responses. Please make sure you use standard composition notebooks - you will be doing more work than necessary with something larger. And, you’ll need to preserve everything, so the hard cover and durable binding of the compositional notebook is a matter of practicality.
- Ensure you have access to your Google Classroom, JCPS Google Drive, JCPS email account, and JCPS Google Backpack. All work will be officially assigned and submitted in one form or another through Google Classroom. Also, all class agendas are posted in Google Classroom daily. So, while our course website offers a course materials space as a kind of online textbook and resource center, Google Classroom is the platform through which all assignments will be assigned and submitted.
- Be prepared to use your JCPS issued Chromebook or appropriate personal device (i.e.not a phone - see “Classroom Expectations” #5 below) in some capacity every day.
- Your agenda/planner/calendar.
- Writing supplies, highlighters, Post-it-notes, and anything else you may need to make reading annotations.
- Your choice of supplies that will help you to facilitate your own method of personal organization for all class handouts/notes.
